Bleating goats go where no weed whacker can in Lowell

LOWELL — Forty Lowell National Historical Park visitors spent the last two weeks following an unusual itinerary: Dining along the Northern Canal Walkway on poison ivy and other nuisance vegetation.

They arrived and departed quietly — except for their soft bleating. These special visitors hail from Goats to Go at Great Rock Farm in Georgetown, which hires out the herd across Eastern Massachusetts.

The National Park kept the goats’ visit quiet to protect them from the curious. The Park Service also fenced them in, using mild electronic zaps to keep them from plunging into the water on the Merrimack River side of the scenic walkway between the O’Donnell and Howe bridges.
